Daily AcreetionOS Update - July 29, 2026
Welcome to today's edition of the AcreetionOS newsletter. We've got some exciting updates to share, including new security features in our GitLab repositories, progress on our web application manager, and some interesting developments in the broader Linux ecosystem. Let's dive right in.
Development Updates: Our team has been hard at work improving our infrastructure and security posture. We've configured Secret Detection and SAST (Static Application Security Testing) in our GitLab CI/CD pipelines, which will help us catch potential vulnerabilities earlier in the development process. These automated security checks are now running on every commit to our main repositories.
On the development front, Natalie has made significant progress with the webapp-manager project. She's added GNU IceCat support and improved UI responsiveness, making the application feel much snappier. There's also a new .gitignore file to keep build artifacts out of our version control system. These changes are bringing us closer to a more polished user experience.
Community News: The wider Linux community is buzzing with activity. Shelly 3.0, a GUI package manager for Arch Linux, has been released as a major update. Wayfire 0.11 has also been released, bringing improvements to this popular Wayland compositor. We're keeping an eye on these developments as they may influence future directions for AcreetionOS.
Security updates were rolled out across various platforms this Tuesday, as is customary. While we don't have specific details about which packages were affected, we encourage all users to keep their systems updated. Our own security scanning tools are now integrated into our development workflow to help prevent vulnerabilities from making it into releases.
Tips & Highlights: If you're looking to customize your AcreetionOS experience, check out Natalie's cinnamon-settings-configs repository. This initial commit lays the groundwork for sharing custom Cinnamon desktop configurations with the community. It's a great way to personalize your desktop while contributing back to the project.
For those interested in privacy-focused browsing, we're excited to see GNU IceCat integration in our webapp-manager. This gives users another option for a truly free software browser experience. The improved UI responsiveness means you won't have to wait long for your web applications to load.
Looking ahead, we're continuing work on our ISO build pipeline and Calamares installer customization. Darren has been refining the kernel configurations and ensuring our CI/CD pipelines remain robust. These behind-the-scenes efforts are crucial for delivering a stable and reliable operating system.
In the broader tech world, there's been discussion about alternative operating systems like ReactOS and Nobara Linux. While we remain focused on our Arch-based approach, it's encouraging to see innovation happening across the entire Linux ecosystem. Competition drives improvement, and we're proud to be part of this vibrant community.
As always, thank you for your continued support of the AcreetionOS project. Whether you're a longtime user or new to our distribution, we appreciate your interest in our community-driven approach to Linux. Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow, and don't hesitate to reach out on our Discord server if you have any questions or feedback.
